General Knowledge Requirement
In the State of Florida, teachers must demonstrate mastery of General Knowledge as one of the requirements for earning a professional teaching certificate.
You may demonstrate mastery of General Knowledge by any one of the following:
The General Knowledge Test The General Knowledge Test consists of four subtests to assess the skills and knowledge needed to begin effective careers as professional educators. About the SubtestsThe subtests are computer-based and scheduled by appointment. They consist of the following: 1. Essay: 1 essay, 50 minutes 2. English Language Skills (ELS) Test: 40 multiple choice questions, 40 minutes 3. Reading Test: 40 multiple choice questions, 55 minutes 4. Mathematics Test: 40 multiple choice questions, 100 minutes What Scores Do You Need to Pass?

Test Fees*One subtest: $32.50 *Fee WaiversThe Department of Education/Bureau of Educator Certification offers fee waivers for initial certification fees and examinations for individuals who fall into the following categories: Military Waiver: This new legislative provision introduces the opportunity for active-duty military personnel, honorably discharged veterans, and their spouses or surviving spouses to request a waiver of registration fees for initial attempts on examinations required for Educator Certification and/or application fees for initial evaluations of eligibility for Educator Certification. First Responder Waiver: The new legislative provision introduces the opportunity for retired first responders, which includes a law enforcement officer, a firefighter, an emergency medical technician or a paramedic to request a waiver of registration fees for initial attempts for the general knowledge, professional education, and subject area examinations required for Educator Certification and/or application fees for initial evaluation of eligibility for Educator Certification.
